    Default New Guy

Hello all, new guy here. Moving over from the saltwater to try my hand at speck fishing some of my area until turkey hunting and cobia fishing take over my life in the spring. I moved to Tallahassee almost a year ago and I understand that Lake Talquin is where it's at for crappie fishing up here. Me and my boy (6) love the water and hope to cover some new ground here shortly. I am a compete newb when it comes to this type of fishing since I have been a saltwater snob since about 10 years old. I see this place is full of good advice, so maybe I can pick up a few tips along the way.

Welcome to speck fishing..... Lot of challenges fishing talquin but big rewards too.... Hopefully you can hook up with a local to show you the ropes.... Good luck!

The finest gift you can give to any fisherman is to put a good fish back, and who knows if the fish that you caught isn't someone else's gift to you?"

Litewirehooker might be willing to help you if you can locate him, or TNT might give you some pointers. Maybe on the Georgia board.

Talquin eh! Lightwire jigheads are an absolute must. Lake Talquin lodge sells em as well as available on sponsor classifieds. Watch out for submerged timber. Great fishery.

I went duck hunting a couple of times this year in Talquin and met a few of the underwater obstructions, all while at idle speed luckily. Got a new rig set up today. An ugly stik gx2 6’ light action with a shimano sienna 2500. I am learning a few things already. I can’t see 4lb test to tie knots at all. This is way cheaper than saltwater fishing setups. Walmart has shimano reels for $30.

i live on lake talquin, near the dam, south or leon county side. tips - first always, always be aware of stumps, especially the thousands you can't see and the ones that suddenly appear in the areas you thought were safe!! the area from williams landing east to the iron curtain is the worst. good fishing there though. maps will do you very little good about the stumps. navigating the lake takes time on the water and talking to locals. excellent crappie lake, good bass, catfish, and fair striper/hybrid lake. most, like me, do longlining/fast trolling with jigs except when they are shallow spawning. spider rigging/slow trolling, casting jigs, or vertical jigging work too. they're preparing to start the move soon to spawn when the weather warms. we've had a lot of cold weather this winter. lite wire jigs are a MUST here. they are sold at lake talquin lodge, ingram's marine, and whipporwill lodge all on the lake - none are sold in tallahassee. best place to buy trolling rods, jig bodies, and catfish stink bait is lake talquin lodge. jared leverette is the guide there and he now the lake better than anyone. my email is: [email protected] for more if you wish. jim (catfish45).

Thanks Catfish45. I'm sure Jdub74 appreciates that good information as much as I do. I will be fishing Lake Talquin for the first time Monday and Tuesday. I spoke with Jared this morning and was lucky to get the last cabin. The stump information really got my attention so we will not be planing the boat. I'm originally from Panama City but now live in Cocoa, Florida. Don't know why we never got over to Lake Talquin all those years. Mostly fished the Wewahitcha area.
