I rarely catch fish around here, even in decent sized lakes, that have the "shoulders" that the real big water fish do, can get the length sometimes, but they'll weigh considerably less than their big water counterparts do.

Central and south Florida have shallow dish pan lakes. A 500 Acre body of water is probably over a mile long, sort of Texas sized
Anything over 12" is respectable. I'd be pleased with what you described.
