    Default Help Me Spend $50

Not sure if you guys saw my intro in the FL OT section, but new guy here from Lakeland.

As mentioned in that thread, I'm a newbie intending on doing some serious learning this fall and winter. That being said, I need to start gearing up. It seems that terminal tackle plays a pretty large role in speck fishing, and being new to all of this, I thought I'd ask for some help from the guys who been around forever.

So, as the title says, help me spend $50 bucks or so to get started. I know it's just a start, but chipping away at stuff always seems less painful.

So, if you were starting from scratch, what would you spend $50-75 bucks on to get into the game?

Jigheads, lures, tubes, etc. Any insight is appreciated.

    Thanks in advance, fellas.

First to do is go to grizzly jig and create a bookmark on your computer. Rest depends on how you are planning to go about this. Single poling fishing banks, trolling or spiderriging. Be careful reading too much in other states reguarding jig weights. Most other states are fishing way deeper than us. Jigheads from 1/64oz to 3/16oz are mostly all you need here and likely more 1/32 and 1/16. Get a few packs of Southern Pro tubes and Hot Grubs and a few packs of sliders to start with. Bad Blood, Acid Rain, John Deere, Black/chartreuse, Blue/ Chartreuse, pearl, Junebug /Chartreuse are a good start. Then some floats, I like the comal pear floats just big enough to barely float the bait if using a cork. Can rig em as slip floats or peg em and even work as a popping cork. Also check the Southern Pro website from time to time on the closeouts and dollar deals. Just take it slow building up baits cause you can easily buy a bunch that just sit around. Oh and check out the contests forum up about the 4th tab down on main page. Win a few of them and you will be fishing well.

    Thanks!

Yeah, knowing how Florida's lakes are typically much shallower than other states, I figured there would be a substantial difference in techniques/gear.

I will be set up for drifting, trolling, or spider rigging primarily. My project of the week is doing some cheap DIY rod holder set ups for spider rigging and trolling for my 1644 jon boat.

Spiderrigging go to Skippers Jigs and get some zip jigs and ice jigs. Also on the member sponsor forum look for Crappielogic and get some Gnats from Donnie. Tip these with minnows. Look back through the Florida Crappie Club forum up top at past tournaments in your area. Harold does a great job of getting winning techniques and colors posted.

Great info, man. Appreciate it big time!

I got a buddy that fishes over that way, lives in Deland, fishes Lake Diaz and the river a good bit.

Thanks! I've been out here since I graduated from USF in Tampa in 2011.

Any of you Lakeland area folks, I'd be more than happy to buy you a beer or other cold beverage sometime, shoot the bull and talk fishing a bit. I live up on the Northside off of Rock Ridge.

I like coffee too! Will shoot you a line here in a bit. I like hanging out with the Old Timers. I worked on offshore charter fishing boats for 6 years when younger, and I could fill up a volume of encyclopedias with the information I was able to glean from many of the captains I worked with and for.
