    Default Humminbird External GPS Question

Hey guys. I have a terrova ipilot (not link) on my crestliner and have recently ordered a Helix 10 G2N GPS and a Helix 10 G2N SI. I have been looking at these external GPS modules and just had a couple questions.

    - Will adding one to the network improve the spot lock on my ipilot
    - Will it make any noticable difference with my Graphs

I've heard these are mainly for the iPilot Link systems to help the unit keep its heading correct. But thought I would ask for a little more info.

first question. no it wont. i pilot uses the gps sensor in the i pilot head.
second question. the external gps puck will make your gps more accurate and it will keep the boat heading icon on under .5 mph. without the external gps puck the boat icon will go to a red circle under .5 mph. external puck will make waypoints more accurate.

If you are looking to improve the low speed course heading you will have to use the AS GPS HS external puck instead of the AS GRP external GPS....There are 2 versions of the external GPS.

With a console unit, the addition of an external GPS antenna will allow you to mount the GPS close to the transom transducer and therefor improve the accuracy of marking waypoints. Since you are normally NOT scanning very slowly at the console, the HS version of the GPS doesn't gain as much as it will at the bow since you will be moving slowly or sitting still more often at the bow.

With a bow mounted unit, the internal antenna is already pretty close to the transducer, so waypoint accuracy can't be improved very much, but the addition of the AS GPS HS will allow you to return to a waypoint easier.
