Default Kinda thinking out loud here...But....adding s separate battery for electronics.

I am considering adding a 4th battery to my boat just to run the electronics. When I say electronics, this includes today - 2-Helix 10 HD SI units, and a ethernet switch, in the future these could be upgraded to Helix 10 Mega SI G2N units and add a 360 unit on the transom. I am upgrading my onboard charger from a 315 to a 440 since I got a deal on a 440 that was cheaper than a 330, and that gives me an extra charging circuit. my existing current drain on the battery is only about 3.5 amps, upgrading everything and adding the 360 would put my current drain up close to 6 amps. Based on this load, a group 24 battery should do the trick and a group 27 battery would add a bit more cushion and also allow me to jump start the big motor if the main motor battery died for whatever reason.

But I guess my questions are:
    1) is the added weight worth the dedicated battery for the electronics?
    2) should I be considering a starting battery or a deep cycle battery?
    3) what am I missing?

If the battery isn't being recharged by the outboard, it needs to be a deep-cycle. You will want to rig some kind of master switch for your electronics to avoid accidentally leaving things on all night.

I'm not an expert on Yamahas, but I know many of their larger (150HP and up) motors have a second charging circuit that could be used to help maintain you auxiliary battery while on the water.

Thanks CatFan, I need to look into that, another thing to consider.

If you need another battery every outing, I would do it. But if you haven't yet, maybe this would give you piece of mind. Mine works well and will boost enough to turn over a V8 with a fully discharged battery in just a few minutes after hooking up. It will also charge phones and what ever else that has a USB end. Also has compressor. Cheap insurance

Is there people that don't use a dedicated 4th battery for electronics ...??

Dang Rickie, I am not sure how you land a fish in that boat with all those toys up there. Heck, land a fish, how do you have time to watch a rod tip for the lite bites with all those screens to watch or is one of the screens an alarm screen to tell you when you get a hit on a pole?

I run a separate 7AH Gel Cell for my Helix 5 DI GPS and my Lowrance straight sonar. I can run one or the other all day long without killing the battery. Charges overnight on a 2 Amp battery maintainer. Much smaller than a standard wet cell, no leaks and no acid corrosion. Can be had for under $30 at one of the Big Box Home Improvement Warehouses and the charger under $20 at Walmart.
