Tracker ... you cannot use the 4GB card. It must be a 2GB micro-SD to work in the unit. Bill has shown a good priced card, but if you don't have a card reader in your computer ... then you might want to consider purchasing this : 2GB microSD Secure Digital TransFlash Card with Reader (BMZ-C)
It's what I bought ... and the micro card fits into the larger holder card, which fits into the side of the flash drive reader, and that can be plugged into any USB 2.0 port on your computer. Then you go to the update link & follow the directions to download the update onto the card ... then put the micro card into your unit & turn the unit on and the update will load into the unit.

I have my update on the micro sd card ... I just haven't put it into the unit, yet. I'm still waiting to find out if any waypoint info could be removed by the update, but haven't had any replies, just yet. I don't think it would, and it shouldn't ... but, I don't want to risk losing any of my 100 waypoints, and have to manually re-enter them into the unit.

Pappy I wish I could remember what the updates did with waypoints if anything. But since I can't what you can do to play it safe is. Copy the update to your computer then delete it from the card. Or just delete it and download it again later. After you have a clean card put it in the unit and download the waypoint file to it. Take the card out and put the update back on it and proceed with the update. If it does do anything with the waypoints you will be able to reload them from the card. Hope that helps. I also keep a copy of the waypoint file on my computer for additional backup.

Can the transducer be mounted to shoot thru a boat hull?

Gordon .... it "can" be epoxied to shoot thru the hull, but it's not recommended due to the degradation of the down scan image : (see panel #5 in this link) http://www.overtons.com/assets/prodman/80486.pdf

I would think your surface temp reading would be off a few degrees, as well. Also, you'd have to realize that since the GPS works off the unit's position, while the DSI works off the transducer's position ... their readings would be off by the distance between the two.

Looks like the transducer and manual are exactly the same for the Elite 4 DSI as it is for the E5DSI.

Yes they are, if you mean the torpedo shaped transducer & the operations manual link I put in the thread. However, there are some things in the operations manual that may apply to one unit & not the other because it's a manual for the Elite 5, Elite 4, & Mark 4 series units.

Like the update ... the manual covers more than one unit, and not all of those units have the same menu options or capabilities.

OK guys/gals ... I took a chance & performed the 3.6 update. I'm happy to say that my waypoints are still intact

A word of warning, though .... after putting the micro sd card in & performing the update, I had trouble removing the card. I had to resort to using a pair of hemostats, as even my fingernails would not hold onto the narrow edge of the card that was sticking out of the slot.

Now that that little feat is done, I'll have to figure out how to go about getting a screen shot onto the card ... transferring it to the computer ... and then posting it on here. Any help in the way of step by step directions would be appreciated. But, for now, at least we know that updating from the 1.00 to the 3.6 programming will not affect saved waypoint info. It "might" change some settings back to factory default, though ... as I did find some of my settings had been changed. Nothing major, and nothing that couldn't be reset to my previous settings. Just a heads up for those that do the update, so they'll be aware of having to look through the settings & put them back to where they'd been.

The card slot on these have a push in / push out mechanism. Kinda like the botton on a ball point pen. If you'll notice next time you plug a card in, it clicks slightly when it is fully seated. When you want to remove it, just push it in again until it clicks. The card will then pop out to where you can get a grip on it.

Word of caution though; be careful not to launch your card out of the unit due to the spring action. Be a real ***** to launch your map card out of the boat to parts unknown.

Just noticed this my 100th post!
