If I was forced to pick a grub design, the one with the pointed tail would be it. I also call it the bullet design.

Of course the plastic would have to be of a very soft grade for the best wiggle on the slowest retrieve using light jigheads in order to be irresistible to fish of ALL species. I would not go much above 2" in length for panfish, with the range starting at 1 1/4 " for ice fishing.

This is the first bullet grub I discovered by accident over four years ago. I don't even remember making it. (note the attached grub keeper wire)

Glad to see someone else likes them Snake.

Seems like they would have no action at all in bait but we do catch fish on plastics that have no action at all just a little Flickr to trigger the fish it is somewhat close to the carrot.

    Hmmm!

    I'm in agreement with Bob,
as I would be tempted to put a split in the tail be it with scissors, or knife

Yes no action,Charlie brewer, started the do-nothing, finesse crappie,Bass, bream designed fishing baits,This time of year water temps below 40 deg,we have dying or injured shad,We also have 10 million shad in the areas we are fishing,Crappie,Bass, walleye, white bass are looking for a easy meal,"less energy""cold water"Full of eggs"to have to chase down an offering."need to conserve energy keep eggs warm"The way we target these fish is with a do-nothing lure. This day of fishing we had caught the fish"crappie all over 10 in" we were going to keep and heading to the Ramp.We Stopped on a long gravel point to ketch kentucky bass!!LOL,I pitched the Ned bullet on a 1/16 oz mid-south jighead up on the grave point to ketch a kentucky bass.A 12 in crappie inhaled the bait,Before it hit the bottom. We culled"replaced" every 10-11 in crappie with a 12-14 in crappie!!,was getting colder and dark left them biting!!We want our baits to slow sink to the bottom with a do-nothing action.High traffic pressured"dead sea,no crappie lake LOL fish had already seen the Bobby garlands, tubes, live minnows!!Baits you can buy at Bass Pro or Walmart! The only time we get to fish a spot 1st is when we start after that you are fishing behind 5-10 boats that have already fished the tree or brushpile. The Crappie are suspended. If the bait falls to fast no bite,no fish,We are fishing these on SOS-2 and 4 # test line!!

No disrespect intended on what works in different waters,

as I also personally have had success dead sticking, do nothing bait.
but my personal success has been with a tad more tail action for the waters I fish

Bob, there is a whole lotta action in the carrot shape ! As far as the Crappie Magnets and other split tails, the tail slit does nothing to add action because they are nothing more than cone, bullet - or as you've labeled them - carrot shapes.
First fish I ever caught on a 1 3/4" carrot:

Another that shocked the crap out of me in another lake:

The secret of the design for all you lure-design enthusiasts, is in the action, or I should say different lure actions made possible by the shape and the plastic's tail softness.

I don't want to hijack the thread so I'll stop here.

    IMO
Never to old to learn with the success we get from sharing information, as to what has worked for us,
Also the input we get to apply to the challenges we encounter on different waters.
