Default BPS Microlite for casting jigs?

Hello from Olympia, WA. I am new to fishing period. I have been fishing for trout and pan fish for the last couple months. I have been using a cheap 5 foot something zebco rod and a plastic spincast reel, a zebco dock demon and a 20year old 6'6 Falcon Medium Heavy with the tip broke off. No boat, shorebound.

So went a couple days ago and bought some gear to cast 1/8 & 1/16oz jigs and lures. Got a BPS Microlite 7'6" Ultralight/ Fast Action rod, a pflueger president 6925 reel and spooled up 110yads of 4lb mono.

I go out and unfortunately it does not cast a 1/8oz lure very far. It does cast a 1/4 Oz lure beautifully.

My question is should I have gotten a light rod instead of an ultralight? For still fishing with powerbait and a slip sinker or under a bobber the other ragedy setups I use work just fine. I was hoping to be able to cast the smaller lures and jigs a little bit farther. I am not that good with distances but I don't think I got the 1/8 Oz lure farther than 30 or 40 feet. I can tell you this much, not even close to as far as I see other guys casting lures and such.

Something is wrong, but I'm not sure what. The rod you have should easily cast a 1/8 oz jig. Can you give anymore details?

FWIW, I used to own that very same rod, and it cast jigs great.

I agree with d4d on this. My first question would be : What brand mono? I have a BPS 5' Ultra-light and throw 1/64th oz jigs on Stren Golden 2lb.

    Default I agree ...

Even with the crappiest line in the world, you should be casting a 1/8oz lure a LOT farther than 30-40ft. (I do that with 1/32oz jig with 6lb test on a 6'6" lite/fast action rod)

It may just be "technique" ... seeing as how this new rod is longer and flimsier than your others.

Thank you guys for your replies.

It may be my casting technique/ form. I will go out to the park by my house later today, do some casts and report back.

The line I used was a Maxima ultragreen 4lb 110yard spool.

Make sure after you cast,to aim and follow the lure with your rod tip in the same directions the lure it's going. This is so the line will shoot straight out of the rod tip,and not be impeded by friction.

If you are casting into the wind, make a low side arm cast close to the water so the lure doesn't catch air. If you casting with a strong wind to your back, cast the lure high so the wind will take it out farther, like a kite.

Something's dragging the line, does that 110' FILL the spool to within say,. a 1/4" of the lip? Perhaps it's not as full as it should be?
And welcome Mike! You will get plenty of info here...hang with it, you'll do fine!
