roanoke rapids, next to the rockfish capital, which by the way is the main problem of the gills not reaching good size for the past 10 yrs or so.to many rockfish in the river during the spring run
I've drank the wine and it is great for blue gills
This only my opinion, but nothing you can say will change my mind. That makes it a FACT.

If the Wildlife Management and Marines Fisheries keep up the good work, making sure the stripers bounnce, we too may have a problem. Though I am doubtful as there are not many big striper who come up this river. The big striper hit the Roanoke, Chowan river are to spawn, but they do not mess around they retorn quickly to the ocean.
We have good size brim and crackers here. There is definate potential for better stock, but it is making a good come back. Fr what I understand there was a big fish kill here several years back.
I catch good numbers whenI go out, today being an exception, as I wasn't much in the shape for fishing. The quality a the fish you catch is good, no matter the size. They are not the biggest I have caught, but I know those are here as well. I just got to bring them to me.

I caught 10 stripers, 22 redfin, 2 blackfish, 1 green carp, and 1 crappie... yesterday. Only fished 1 1/2hr.
Yeh I think I'll stick with what I know, the heck with trolling for stiper.

How did you catch the stripers? Were You spider rigging for all the fish? How deep were you fishing? We caught the perch up about 4 to 6 feet of water Saturday. We caught crappie deep. 8 to 12 feet over 17 to 20 feet of water. They were scattered. If I had figured them out earlier we would have caught more of them. Caught 5 in an hour but they were good size. Could have caught a nice mess over the time We fished had I found them sooner. Also lost 6 good fish because of bad line. Jig kept breaking off. Thought I had pulled off the bad line each time but the bad was mixed in with the good. When the bite is slow, every bite counts so I was frustrated to no end. Hope to get out this week again and take advantage of this warm weather before it turns cold again. CF

I fished a hole with a good drop that i fish a lot. I was fishing 6-8ft, just sit'n still. I don't have electronic so I resorted to the ancient style of fishing... stick to what you know.
The best thing I have found to do is run the river right on the slope of the channel... I'm sure that is what you are doing.
This weather has shut the bite off again, too nice out. We are supposed to be getting a bunch of rain, hoping to get a few a head of the front.

By the way if you guys made it to me the other day, you may be fishing them too fast... not that you did bad, but they are slow biting. I cleaned a striper that had 3 of MY minnows in his belly. Funny even the striper would not pull the bobber under and would rob me of bait. I never did try jigs. The frequency of the bite was fast but the feel was slow... real finicky.

Yep pretty much most of the time. I worked the ledge the other day with one 16 footer up on the top of the ledge and then 12 footers all along the drop and the other 16 footer out over the deep water. Ended up finding the crappie suspended over the channel. As prespawn gets started they will work the ledges and drops a lot more. Around any mouths of ditches coming into the river or any flats (which are hard to find on that river)where they will spawn in the spring. CFOriginally Posted by stumpbumpers
