    Default Chickahominy River

Looking for new spot to try for crappie fishing. Usually go to Kerr, but it's a little farther than I want to travel for a short trip. Doing some research, I found River's Rest Resort on the Chickahominy River. Anybody have any info on the river in that area, or on the resort itself? Not fixed on the Chickahominy itself, but would like to find a good crappie spot say between the Potomac or the James rivers. Would need to have reasonable accommodations and room for a boat. Thanks, Ron

The Chick has a good fish and a lot of fish. I only know a little about it but it a super fishery. Crappie, bass and catfish. I can find fish when they are deeper, heat of the summer and cold of the winter. But there are plenty of cypress trees with knees, grass/lilly pad lines and boat docks. Also some brush/wood cover that is not visible.

When you coming? This whole area has many choices without having to drive to Buggs/Gaston (but they are GREAT fisheries and an easy drive from here if you want to). We have the James and all of it's creeks. Same for the Chick. Diascund Res. (trolling motor only. Just don't crank the gas motor). Lake Chesdin. Lake Anna, which I know nothing about, but it has a couple of bridges with pillings that hold fish all summer.

How do you like to fish? Minnow/cork, casting jigs, trolling, spider rigging? Do you have a good fish finder? Have Side Scan? What are you fishing out of?

Chester, VA area hotels puts you right on the James/Appomatox rivers. 30 minutes to Chesdin. 40 minutes to Chick and Diascund. 1.5 hours if Buggs calls to you. Most of the Chester hotels have some way to get an extension cord to the boat. There are 275 college BASS teams here to night for a 2 day tournament starting in the morning. All of Chester is safe, for you and your rig. This is the intersectin of I-95 and Rt. 10. The nearest exit north (Willis road) and south (Walthall) are not trustworthy for your rig.

Woodduck can give help for Diasund and Chick. Oh, it just hit me that there are 2 parts to the Chick. Tidal river and Lake above Walkers dam. Both full of crappie. I'd think Woodduck would share some info thru private message.

If you come, I'll give you my cell number and we can talk or meet and go over a map. The James is tricky and can be dangerous. It is worth it have a good mapping software on your fish finder. The Chick, you have to pay attention also, but not quite as dangerous. There is one shallow flat and a couple barges that are marked on most decent map software.

If you are using live minnows on the Chick or James, expect to get tired of catching small catfish. They are everywhere and stay hungry. They are like little sharks but they keep things interesting.

We can talk. Not going to put specifics on the open forum for the lurkers to use.

Ron, are we changing locations? I have fished the Chick many times and there are other great crappie lakes in that area. Greg can help you out a lot. He fishes them all..

Not giving up on Kerr, just looking for something closer for shorter trips. Cancelled my mountain trip as the weather really cooled off. Looks like it's cooled off in VA too. Itching to get the boat out again after our trip to Kerr.
