    Default Barge Pits Kayak Access

Hey all. Thinking about taking the yak to pitch jigs at the barge pits one day in the net few weeks- anyone know of an easier way to get there than the 2 mile paddle from the Dutch Gap boat ramp? From what I can see, Henricus park is the closest place to park, but is it possible drop a yak from one of those feeder roads, park, and then walk back to launch? Thanks in advance for any input!

I wish I had better news. That is a long paddle, especially in cold water and main river boat wakes. If you have a wheeled dolly, you can take the yak behind the Henricus visitor building. The first hill is kinds steep but after that it's nice flat walking. You can launch at the first 'bay' on the left or keep walking to get you to the first floating dock inside the barge pit. I would be sweet if there was access to the barge pit for yaks and such.

There are attachments for your yak to make it wheeled, but like dayton said you still have to haul it a good distance before you can launch.

While I do not have a dolly, I am young and dumb enough to give that portage option a try. Might give that a shot later this week if anyone has a wild hair!

That water is getting cold out there. Be careful. Be seen. Bass boats will surely buzz you.

Thanks for the heads up! Got a quick paddle around the Powhatan lakes after work today... a bunch of good marks in 8-10 FOW, but no bites. SST 44. I swear crappie are the one species in VA that has always eluded me... if anyone near Richmond is into yakking and wants to show me what I'm doing wrong some time, shoot me a PM!

You should go to the Chicahominy on Saturday and fish with Woidduck. He and others will be yakking it up. They will catch fish. Going to be warm too.
