Default New Crappie Fisherman - W'burg Area

Glad to be part of this group! Been reading through the site over the past few weeks. I live in Williamsburg, and normally fish the Bay, as well as the Rappahannock and James for saltwater fish (Stripers, Specks Etc). My son (15yo) has been doing a lot of bass fishing during the COVID shutdown in local ponds. Long story short, we were recently at Hookers in Toano, and I saw some crappie jigs, and ended up purchasing a few. I have not focused on freshwater fishing in a while, but grew up fishing for small and largemouth bass, bream and crappie up new Fredericksburg. I found my old tackle box and ultralight and we snuck out yesterday in our canoe for 2 hours right before sunset. We fished Morris creek at the WMA, and I hooked into what I thought was a bass. It crushed my ultralight and 6 lb test. Was fishing a small jig next to some cypress stumps and a fallen tree. It was a beast of a crappie! Anyway, can't stop thinking about that fish, and want to get back out there. If anyone could provide tips for the Chickahominy river or Diascund Res. I'd appreciate it. Want to get back out there with my son. Not looking for "honey holes" just advice for this river. Also not looking to go "pro"... don't get to fish all that much, just want to increase my knowledge and my "odds" when I head out in the future. Thanks!

My in-law's lived in Williamsburg and I fish that area for many years. One thing I found was I used 2 jigs and sometimes would use a orange jig head with orange bucktail. At times this out fished other colors. There are a few other places that a canoe will work great so keep on exploring.
It is good to see you did well and seem to be hooked.
