    Default Striking Out

My last two trips out I absolutely struggled to find em. Fished the North Landing River, up Blackwater Creek today and fished every possible depth. Water temp was 65 and only caught one. Went back out to the main River and hit a little cut and caught two. Eight total hours, three fish.
Last Sunday, I fished four hours and never caught a fish. This is just unusual to strike out like this.

Whats everyone else seeing in the river systems that could help me out

Sorry your struggling but so am I. I've had friends who are great fisherman expressed the same results for this spring.
Bass fishing has been great all winter and spring but crappie have been tough. I'm looking forward to 89 water and fish piled up all over my waypoints.

The rivers and creeks around us are difficult to pin down. I have been fishing Northwest River for years and I am just starting to crack the shell. Tap out did good on that river, as he did on Northwest. Look for drop offs or the channel where the creeks comes out to the main river. I would find them on the edges of the channel, in about 6 to 12FOW, down about 4 foot. In the early spring late winter I will be tightening with six rods in front. I h OP pe this helps you out. I am by all means no expert, I have my Crappie days to. Last time out it was all white perch not a crappie to be found.

    Glad it's not just me.

We have had a series of alternating strong North and South wind this year, blowing the water out and back in the rivers. The result is a lot of chocolate colored dirty water that seems to kill the bite.

If you can find the narrow band of good water between the chocolate downriver and the coffee upriver, you can get a few.

But what we need is a sustained period of light winds and steady rains to clean the rivers out.

I’ve been struggling here on the James. The crappie never showed up to my favorite winter spots this year. I’ve got by butt kicked a bunch.

Didnt strike out today. Went down to Coinjock and fished the North River. Got into the big yellow belly perch throwing a beetle spin in 3-5 feet of water

I have had my best luck fishing the North Landing River during the warmer months. Never any luck otherwise. Digging into my logs, the following dates show how many crappie I caught that day in the winter/spring.....

5/9/2015-3 crappie, surface water temp 75.
3/25/2017-5 crappie, surface water temp 52.
1/27/2018-0 crappie, surface water temp 43.
1/6/2019-0 crappie, surface water temp 51.

Never anything bigger than 1lb 4oz. I have had some luck at one spot up West Neck Creek and have fished Blackwater Creek but don't feel safe with the winding turns and bass boats screaming by around the blind bends. One of our members has had luck up the Blackwater Creek but moved out of the area.
