    Default Gaston 6/17

Took the boat to Gaston today and fished with a former coworker I haven't fished with in years. It was great to catch up on old times and we hammered the Crappie while we were at it. We probably could have caught plenty of fish on jigs but we actually used 1/16 jig heads tipped with Gulp minnows. He has never really crappie fished and Gulps I think made it a little easier on him because the crappie were flying on them. The spots we fished were all in the 25 foot range near or actually in the main lake. We fished rock and a couple brush piles. For sheer outright excitement was the moment a four foot long blue catfish came crashing up on top and snatched a 12" crappie right off my line at about the same moment my friend was reaching out to net the crappie. It was crazy and glad I was able to see it. I also learned that white perch up to a pound each are being caught trolling cranks up and down the creek arms.

One thing I've noticed since I started targeting crappie is the number of times Bass and other predatory fish come up and try to rip a struggling crappie off the line. There must be something about the vibrations that crappie cause in the water that initiates that strike reflex. I never saw that while catching other fish, not even bream.
