    Default Crappie spawn over?

I was just wondering if you all think the spawn is over, or not started in full swing yet? Have not got any big females yet, but lots of small males. What do you all think?

Lake Austin is still warming up although over half of the fish we catch have eggs seldom do they have the red veins indicating ready to spawn. I think they are late because the lake was lowered 10 feet then refilled from the cold bottom of Lake Travis and the crappie are just catching up.

when you say red veins, do you mean around the egg sack?

Yes. According to the crappie guide we occasionally fish with the red veins in the egg sack indicating imminent spawning. Our only other indicator that the spawn is not fully on is we are not catching them in the shallows yet. We still catch some over brushpiles so we are still enjoying the sport.

every lake river is different, even parts of same river vary, my 2 cent is we are nearing peak but have not reached. One part of lake is 60 degrees and another shoreline is still 56, on a sunny, vary warm day darker waters may hit 70+ degrees on the SURFACE! hint hint on the surface.

let the big girls go, that is the only way for them to get bigger. It sure is nice to catch a slab once in a while!

I see you are from NY. Is that where you are fishing or are you in Va? They will spawn later in the year in NY than VA due to different climates. As a general rule they will be in pre spawn areas (flats) when the water temp is 50-56° and start spawning when it is 56-60°

No. They never all spawn at the same time. Survival of the species
And with that, I'll see you on the water...
