I think you'll be ok, my friend has a 19' bass tracker with a 90 horse and he likes the way it handles.
I just bought a Javelin 409 bass boat. Just the boat and trailer. I had to jump on it quick and did not get much time to research. My old bass boat's transom rotted and has a 115 Yamaha. This Javelin is a 20' bass boat. Is there going to be enough horses to move this boat decent? I'm not looking for a speed demon but would like to run 35MPH. Opinions and suggestions welcome.
I also am wondering about the old engine mount holes in the transom. The wood looks good but if my motor mount holes or jack plate holes don,t line up, what do I do? I know this issue must be dealt with on a regular basis. Thanks for info.
This is looking to be a project boat but I want to get the basics going on it so I can get back to fishing. Lots of wiring going to have to be done.CF

Well Dummy, what were you thinking?
Okay, seriously, you will be fine. The holes will match. The 90 will be fine. Worst case it you drop down 2-4" in prop pitch to give you a stronger hole shot. A bit of wiring work and you will be fishing. Go ahead and put in a new steering cable before you hang the motor.
Congrats. You will enjoy the room. Maybe add a swim ladder or emergency ladder to the rear. You are getting older and a slip into cold water will make it terribly difficult to get back into the boat. We put one of these on my FIL's boat. The guy is now making them with flats machined on the top of the step for better footing.

115 horses will push that just fine!
Welp. This is turning out to be a serious project. Floors rotten from the drain hole back. gonna replace the floor but have not figured out how we are going to do that yet. The livewell and dry storage boxes are glassed in and only a couple inches above the floor on the sides. Might have to pop the top cap off to do that I'm thinking. If We go that route, it will give me the opportunity to check out the stringers while I'm at it. Ripped up carpet today, pulled the bench over the gas tank and then pulled the gas tank out. My Dad is helping me. I'm doing the manual stuff for the most part and he is watching me and helping with the decisions. My Uncle told me today he would give me directions and help where he could. He was in the boat building business for 30 years plus. He told me today he could get me resin that is normal $60 for at cost $20 and fiberglass matting at a good price too. So I will buy the new wood and then the fiberglass material at a deep discount. I was planning on just patching this boat good enough to fish a year or two and then selling it and buying a new rig. Now that I am going to do this job, I think I will get everything fixed up right, keep the boat and put a new motor on it when I get rid of a loan I am paying on. Probably hang a 200 back on it then. We Will see. I'm thinking $500 tops in material for the floor fix. Probably another 1000 to 1500 with other stuff like some trim and cosmetic repair. Trailer is in great shape, is newer than boat and just needs some touch up paint. When We get through, this is going to be a great boat for me and my family. The platform is so much wider than My old boat and enough room for 3 or 4 to fish comfortably for crappie. Gonna be a machine for sure. Gonna lose some fishing time but will be worth it in the end. This will be a lot cheaper way to get a great boat and save THOUSANDS over buying a newer rig. I'll post some pics soon. Going to take a bunch for references on the fixes.CF

I've got mixed emotions on projects.
My big boat, a 1988/2012 28' dusky center console, I went thru completely over the course of 3 years. The only thing original is the running surface. New decks, fuel tanks, console, tower, bracket, stringers, cap, pumps, wiring, motors, ect... It's a killer boat, but I could have bough a really nice ready to run machine for what I have wrapped up in it. I will never do that again. (Lol I said that after I built my mako, the shamrock, and the topaz..)
Budget- write what you think it will cost on paper, triple that figure, then throw the paper away. You will go over it, no matter how frugal you are if you do things the right way.
Time- 2-3x what you think. Cold temps are a killer, high temps are a killer, humidity is a killer... You can plan to work on it all weekend and Friday night work will want you to work all weekend or the neighbors kid will have a bday party.
Motivation- it's tough when all you do is buy stuff and see little progress. But at some point you will turn a corner and it'll be a dash for the finish line.
For or some insight to what you will be getting into, check out classic mako.com. Lots of rebuilds and fabricating work on fiberglass boats.
Projects are cool when they are done, but miserable when in progress.
If your stubborn like me, let me give you some advice...
Buy twice what you think you will need
Buy in bulk. ( 5 gal buckets of resin, I'd say 3-4 for your project- $106 each at eastern burlap in Norfolk) rolls of glass, (1708db 50"x 100yds will run $600 or so, from what you listed as the rebuild, you will need at least one roll)
buy boxes of brushes - you will literally used hundreds of them. 1" and 2" chip brushes- cheap and disposable
Napatha- better than acetone as a solvent, it doesn't evaporate like acetone. Buy the 5 gal bucket.
Gloves- nitrile, buy 4-5 boxes.
Tyvek suits- you will ruin a lot of clothes otherwise
flapper wheels and cut off wheels- buy the 25ct box. You will need all of them. $50 for the bulk Box or $4 each at lowes..
a respirator- get a good one. A 3m 6000 series full face is the Cadillac model, and worth every penny of the $145.
Good luck.
