    Default A Good Sept. Start - 9/1/20

Hey Folks! We hit the Quabbin this morning (only our 3rd. trip this year!) and started fishing around 7:30 am. Air temp was around 54 degrees with the water around 70. Winds were calm to start with. This is what she looked like when we left the launch area:

We were planning on drifting, but with no breeze, that left us with casting and vertical jigging. Still, the bite was decent. By about 9:30 am the breeze picked up a bit and by 11:00 am we had between 5 to 10 mph wind. However, it was from all directions, which made presentation difficult. But like the old Indian once said, "we endeavored to persevere"!

We didn't mark much in the way of bait or fish today; the fish didn't know that though. Here's one of the few bait balls we did find:

And marking fish was scarce and not of any encouraging regularity. A small group here.....a solo there:

As you can see, we focused on the main basin area, which is where we've had our previous successes. Fish being marked or not, the action was hot & heavy for most of the day. We used mainly straight tailed plastics, with electric chicken and monkey milk being very productive. I tried road runners and even vertically jigged 1/4 oz. blade baits on & off bottom.....but no love there! Twister tails didn't do well either. They merely wanted straight tailed plastics moving right along.

One surprise right off the bat was this largemouth! Pretty neat on 2# test line down around 20' of water!

And of course, that couldn't be out-done by me catching the smallest specimen of white perch I've ever seen in my life!

We had a good laugh over that bit of angling expertise!

OK....bottom line, we really did have a good day. Walt & I caught & released 102 fish today when we pulled off at 1:30 pm. Not bad by any standard, in my opinion. Nothing of any great size though. I believe the fishery is becoming stunted due to lack of harvesting. Personally, I prefer eating salt water fish, so we are not doing this fishery any great service. But at my age, I'll leave the environment to the younger generation. We just fish for fun!

Here are some of the fish we caught; 3 bluegill, that one HUGE white perch and one largemouth bass; the rest being our beloved crappie!

When we quit fishing, this is what the lake looked like upon our departure:

Doesn't get much better than that! All in all a great way to spend the better part of the day with a good friend and fisherman. Hope some of you were able to get out and experience the marvelous weather we are having. God Bless you all and God Bless America!
