Great news for you being able to get out and fish. Wonderful results for the first trip of the season, even though they weren't the target species. Glad to see you going with lighter tackle, you will enjoy it. Tight lines to you.
Finally got a chance to wet a line for the first time this season. At last, a warm spring day with tolerable wind. At mid day, I decided to play hookey from work once my customer showed up to pick up his project; said he'd be there by 1:30. He finally showed up at 2:45 and by that time the wind was winding up pretty good in front of the cold front that is supposed to come through tonight. I decided I was going anyhow and was on the water about 3:30, pulled off about 6:20 in very gusty winds; I fought them the whole time. I trolled about 85% around the pond just outside the weed edges, casting a bit here and there when I had a chance and never marked a fish or had a hit. Didn't care, at least I was fishing finally. I got pushed out in to some deeper water and finally had a light strike on the 1/32 oz. roadrunner and landed my first fish of the year, a stocker trout, 10-11".
Only problem is that he twisted the RR all up in the net and I busted off the spinner getting him unhooked and out; oh well, that jig has served me well for about 3 years.
I tied on a 1/16 oz. road runner in it's place and 10 minutes later landed the twin to the first one:
Tossed the lines back out again and about 20 minutes later I landed this hefty trout:
This may be the largest trout I've landed; he was 14-15" long, very deep bodied (he completely filled my hand) and quite heavy. Probably a breeder fish that they stocked to give someone a good memory. Had the hooked lower jaw and all.
This was also the last fish of the night. I trolled around over the deeper water for a while longer and although I was marking fish (all deep, 22-24') I had no other takers so called it quits. Thankfully, I wasn't skunked; I didn't keep the trout as I don't care for them on the plate and I refuse to pay the tax to get the stamp to keep them.
All 3 came on the new setup, a BPS Micro-lite pole and a new Pflueger president 25 series. I probably should have gone UL rather than light on the pole but at 6 1/2' long it has plenty of give at the tip to have fun with whatever is on the other end.
A good time was had despite the wind and I'm hoping that my next trip won't be too far off.
Yes, I was talking to myself; sometimes even I have to ask for expert advice.
