Thread: Report; 9/27/19 FOG!

What a foggy start! It was clear most of the way up to the Quabbin, but as soon as we got close, it was literally "socked in". Walt & I took our time heading out through the channel to the main basin area. This is what it looked like leaving the dock:



Ya gotta know the water or you can get into trouble, fast! Being 40 year veterans of the "Q", we know our way around OK. When we got out to the main body, the sun came out a blazin'.....cutting through the fog quickly:



When we started fishing (8 am) the air temp was 46 degrees, but the water is still warm at 70. Breezes were all but non existent and we started off side pulling the main basin over 18' - 23' of water. We marked several good pods of bait with fish and each time we saw this on the 2D, we got hit. Here's a couple of screen shots:





These bait balls were far & few between, but we did manage to catch & release 22 fish in the first hour. Not too shabby, if I don't say so myself!

When we pulled off at 1 pm (5 hours of fishing), we had tallied 73 fish between us. Thirteen were bluegills and one largemouth bass. A really decent day for us.

Lots of folks fish these water specifically for largemouth bass. Just goes to show you that you do not need pool cue rods and 8" swimbaits to catch one now and again! LOL! This one decided to eat a 1/8 oz. ball head with a BGBS straight tail on the back.

It just doesn't get much better folks! We are trying our darndest to get in as many trips out on the "Q" as we can before it shuts down, the 3rd. Saturday in Octorber. Then we'll be restricted to more local waters, which could prove quite interesting before ice up.

Another great trip for you guys. Good to see. And you're right, you can get a big guy at any time on our smaller baits and "on the lighter size" gear. I didn't write about it but last year I caught my personal best LMB on a 1/32 oz. head with a Southern Pro stinger while fishing for my usual panfish. Was NOT expecting it; just like I missed the big fish last trip. We get lulled into the "usual" size fish and then WHAM! Give a little credit to yourself, too, for getting a nice fish like that in to the boat. It ain't all in the tackle, you know.
