    Default Report; 9/24/19

We had another great morning out on the Quabbin Reservoir. When we launched, the air temp was 58, which was much better than yesterday's high of 92 degrees! The water remained consistent at around 72 degrees. Winds were light and variable and coming from many different directions, as post frontal conditions faced us. Maintaining a course with the side pulling TM proved to be a challenge to say the least.

Fall is coming on strong regardless of the weather and here are couple of shots as we started out:

This reservoir is mainly pine, so the colors are sporadic here & there. We probably won't get many great New England Fall foliage shots for you folks on this body of water. But as we shift to others, colors should become more dramatic.

We only marked fish here & there as we side pulled our jigs. We mainly used 1/16 & 1/8 oz. ball heads, dressed with CB Slider Grubs and BGBS straight tails. The deeper jigs had shad colored bodies, but the lighter jigs had more color - pink & chartreuse proved dynamite today! However, my "gray ghost" horse head spin really came into being as the morning wore on. BTW, our best (GPS) speed today was .8 mph. We varied this troll between .7 & 1.2 mph as well, but that "magical" .8 proved to be the ticket for today.

We took several sonar screen shots as we trolled along. Thought some of you might like to see what we were looking at. this first one was typical of the spotty small groups of bait & fish:

This shot is plain ole' bait:

Here is one of the best "groups" of fish & bait that we found today:

Finally, a large ball of bait & fish:

Hope that's too boring, but it is significant (to us anyway) when you are searching any body of water and want to start up some action. When we pulled off at about 12:40 pm today, we had caught & released 59 fish. Eight were bluegill, with the rest crappie. Here are a sampling of some of the fish we caught today:

If I were to nailed it down, I'd say that 1/3 of our catch was on straight tails, 1/3 on paddle tails and a respectible
showing with misc. plastics and my ole' stand-by, the Road Runner. With the fast moving overhead cloud cover, we had periods when it was hot....cold.....and in between. But all in all, a delightful day to spend on the water with a fine fishing partner. I took this one shot before leaving:

Pretty representative of how our day was overall. We did get to see the eagle one time. But no other wild life this trip.
