As predicted, it did rain yesterday....but not before I was able to get the lawn mowed - finally! So, today was all mine.....mine & Walt's of course. We decided to hit the same pond as on Monday, but this time we had 'em cornered! We knew where they were......and we were prepared to kick butt! LOL! NOT!
Leave it up to the crappie to turn a perfectly great weather day into a less than stellar one, fish catch wise. We deliberately left early, arriving around 7:55 am....rarin' to go! When we got to the 8' flat just above the 15' drop off, we anchored and began casting the area. Here's what the scene looked like:
Talk about a pretty start! The day started out in the low 50's with the water still at around 59 degrees. Seemingly perfect pre-spawn situation. Winds were a bit brisk to start with, so we had to bundle up to keep warm. Wish I'd have brought that coffee thermos along! Anyway, after my second cast, this is what I nailed on a white 1/16 oz. marabou jig:
Boy...are we on a roll! It's lights out from this point on. NOT! Here's the bottom line. After we pulled off at 12:55 pm we had only 14 fish between us (C & R), with only 3 being crappie! The rest were 8 pickeral, 2 bluegill and I lost one beaut of a brown trout (he took a chartreuse Slider no less!) at boatside, so no picture of him.
We plied the depths trolling, side pulling and casting. Here's the gamut of the depths we marked fish and tried to catch:
Fish galore! Only they had lock jaw. We drifted, trolled and cast straight tails, Slider Grubs, tubes and Road Runners. Nothing got 'em turned on today. Did manage another crappie picture late morning:
Several F-15 fighter jets put on quite a show for us today as well, but the star of the day had to go to the osprey who flew over us several times:
One magnificent bird! Great day to be on the water regardless of our meager success. We'll try the main river system next.....then on to the Quabbin, after the spawn. Hope some of you had a chance to wet a line on this rare, rain free, sunny day!

Well that's frustrating. That is what makes Crappie fishing such an interesting activity. Just when you think you have them figured out they do that to you. Good luck next time.
It’s a good day whenever you can be on the water!
