Default Old Fisherman - new to Crappie fishing

I've caught a few crappie through the ice, now it's time to figure them out in open water. I have caught a couple while bluegill fishing in the spring but never targeted them. This year, I plan to fish for them 'on purpose' . I'm in northern Vt, normally fish Champlain but could be talked into other lakes as well. I'll be posting success (or lack of) , once i uncover the boat and get it in the water.

Any tips on location, depth, water temp, jigs , greatly appreciated.

i fish 2 ponds with regularity and find them in different places. one pond, i can count on finding the, around the cat tails on the north side. the other pond, they hang around the lily pads and islands of surface weeds. Fished a new to me pond this weekend and could only find them in 2-4 feet of water hanging around blow downs. I fish a maribou jig 2-3 feet below a stick float. sometimes they want it jigged aggressively and sometimes just dragged slowly with an occasional jiggle

Champlain is one body of water I haven't fished in over 50 years! We use rent a cabin in Virgennes, on a river leading to the main body. Fished it for walleyes and pike mainly. Love to try that water for crappie! You should be able to get some big girls there for sure. As far as suggestions go, just read all the posts here in the past year or two, and you'll be well ahead of the game. Also, as I recall, there use to be a great bait shop in that town way back then. Try to find one and ask questions. Great folks up there. They'll steer you in the right direction I'm sure. Good Luck!

Thanks for the tips, I never would have fished water that shallow ....nice to know that. THe point about jigging aggressively or slowly, a lot like ice fishing, it changes with different times and you just have to keep up with what they want. WIll be on the water next weekend.

Fished this Saturday and last Saturday , shallow bay on northern LakeChamplain. First Sat , water was 60 degrees and this past Saturday it was near 70. Caught some nice fat sunnies and a few SMB . No crappie to be found. We were fishing LFT Live Baby Shad, 2 " curlytail grubs, and some Kalins crappie grubs.

Is 70 degree water too warm ? Maybe I need to go deeper than 5 FOW.
