Thread: EVER SEEN CRAPPIE

Brother and I had a similar experience. Black crappie started hitting jigs anywhere, top water, just under and below. Fast as we could unhook them and pitch the jig back there was a race to hit it. We finally stopped taking them to the live well and just put them in the floor around us as we did not know how long it would last. It did not last over 10 minutes but that event will stay in my memory for a long time. All were in the 13-14” range with wide shoulders. I did not realize they would do that. Glad to hear you witnessed such a great event.

These stayed up on top for only 30 seconds or so

I need to pay attention!
Lots of times sandbass blow up right close, I’m Crappie fishing!

one thing that is one of the deciding factors in my episode is a zero existence of any striped fish , no sand bass , no yellow bass , no stripers or etc in that lake and black bass are few and far between . so when i see fish on top schooling its most always going to be crappie , i had my first experience there years ago watching a shad flying out of the water multiple times and thought a sand bass was chasing it , the shad came right by the bow of the boat like a bullet and much to my surprise HOT on its tail was a nice crappie

I haven't confirmed but have heard of it and have seen this happen in the far distance on a lake that is said to have no sand bass.....

I have seen them do that before, really unusual for sure!

them there sloshing and slurping sounds they make when they do it is pretty unique my friend . its obvious fish are schooling but it less frenzied than when sand bass/stripers and black bass come up top .
and its a lot more uniform in appearance as well , it seems to be lots less sporadic and much more organized .
i bet money it would be some kinda cool to see it from below water level

Not so much schooling, but i was fishing a group of lilly pads one time and they were feeding so hard, they were coming out of the water and landing on lilly pads. Most just slid off, but a few had to flop around.
