Only other way is near the tail, but I use the lips and sometimes the eye more. However I only use minnows in the summer and then I also use a jig below the minnow.

Grew up hooking behind dorsal fin but moved to hooking through bottom lip then top lip. They last longer and seem to move better.

I have been hooking them right below the dorsal fin for way longer than I am willing to admit, never had any survival issues unless I missed a bite.
