Thread: Jig Colors

Trying to figure out colors out of the gazillion combinations you can use is like trying to crack a combination lock without the combination!!

If I could only have 10 colors I would "not" be a happy man.....

I could probably limit myself to 10........ but why? I do catch an awful lot on gray ghost, chartreuse/white or white jigs. Those are my top 3.

With having livescope its proven that color is a small factor VS Size and Presentation!

The boat I fished on yestdy has live scope but the unit wasn't workn..... They were worried we would be at a disadvantage but i knew with the SI unit i could get us on fish..... And we caught fish just fish until EZ found the color the bigger fish wanted.... When I put a similar color jig on i was on the big'uns....
My point to this story is what you have confidence in and put time in to learn to use will get you on more and bigger fish.....
In my opinion live scope is no where near as important as folks try to make it......
In my opinion a person that know how to operate a SI unit will always be on fish......I've seen a lot of live scope guys locked onto seeing inactive fish and spending all day try'n to make them bite.....
We all have the choice to decide what tools to use and live scope ain't one of the tools I choose.....
Way to expensive to see blobs move around, in my opinion.....
In my opinion color matters a lot and can be the difference in catchn no fish, just fish or good fish.........

Okay remember you ask, lol!

I am going to talk Spring and maybe Fall if you have the right spot to longline. First let me start using spring water depths and I believe the main crappie hold out in something like 6' to 7 1/2' water depth and some go in to the very shallow water to lay their eggs, but then back to that holding depth. So I try to fish where the most are and then it's a matter of color and how clear or stained the water is. For this lake and my personal way to help make it easier I use the 3' down as my clear or stained depth. So if I can see my jig 3' or more down the water is clear and less is stained, but then also how stained?

With that in mind I have a number of jigs I use depending on this 3' test. Now if I can see my jig 3' or more down I really like Silver/Silver/FL Blue or Silver/Blue/White, but their are more that I like too.

Then if I can not see it 3' down I am going to Chartreuse/Blue/Chartreuse or Chartreuse/Black/Chartreuse and again there are others too.

Then lets say it rained yesterday or last night hard and now our Clear water is super stained and you can see the jig down maybe just one foot or less, then I want my jig that is Flame Red/Chartreuse & Black/Hot Orange!

There are some that I feel may work in both the first two, clear and stained I like a Silver FL Yellow/FL Blue and feel this will work maybe in both? See picture for some of these combos.

Couldn't find the Silver/Chart/FL Blue fast enough to show it, but when you get some Chartreuse Crystal Antron that is not so much the Green Chartreuse, that is the color!
I failed to mention the Flame Red/Kelly Green/FL Yellow jig, but it's a darn good one too!

Excellent write up Skip and sound like your going low contrast in clear water and high contrast in murky waters.....
I tie on both regardless of water clarity and sometimes it works opposite......
I fish the deeper depths just outside the spawning grounds in spring and I feel the big females don't go shallow until nightfall......
