I have tried forward view and then switched to down view as it seems to provide a better pattern for two people fishing the front of the boat.

I can see when the blob of my jig occupies the same 2d dimensional space with the blob of the fish but I can not tell if they are in exactly the same space or a few feet apart. I definitely can not see the fish strike the jig. I can see the blob approach the area of the jig and will raise the rod tip when that happens. But I can not say that I see the crappie strike the jig.

So I would love to know your settings so I can get my unit to do a better job.
Forward view as our lake is less than 40 feet deep and the brush we fish is 18-34. I change settings every time I go to another location but I normally set 65-75 percent gain. TVG and noise reject at low or off. Auto depth until I confirm the depth of brush then 5 feet deeper on manual setting. Initial range at about 30 feet then back to 20 feet as I position the brush off the left front of the boat so my brother and I can both reach it. There is a good chance there is a difference in our models as I was fortunate enough to go with the top end 10 inch model, the 8610xsv which has a glass display with many pixels (I think I am using the right terminology), and a few other bells and whistles. I can see the fish approach the jig then I look to my rod tip initially so I do not jump the gun (took awhile to learn this), then glance back at the LS. Occasionally the bite is so light the crappie has lifted the jig or moved laterally, a touch almost impossible to feel but can see so I set the hook. Understand, though, you are seeing in three dimensions so what may look like your bait and the fish being adjacent could also mean it is a foot away from that plane if your transducer is facing the two. Does that make sense? We mainly use the LS to confirm fish and then just treat the rod action like normal. Hope this helps.

Thanks. We are using similar settings although I have now switched to down view as I fish a pontoon. I have found down view is better to set the boat where both can fish the structure. The difference is in the display unit as I had trouble spending $2700 for a 10" unit. I bought the 93 sv when it was on sale for $600. Sometimes I wish I had spent the extra $2100 but at the time I also wanted a HB Solix 15 to replace the 10" 999 I had on the console and had recently bought MK 112# Ultrex so I went cheap on the Garmin display unit.

I'm now trying to convince myself that I need a garmin on the console to go with the solix unit. If I manage to do that then I am going to get the more expense garmin unit to put on the front of the pontoon and move the current unit to the console.

I've seen a lot of crappie on brush but never anything like that. Maybe I need to switch lakes.
