I usually just longline for crappie in the spring and they when you can catch them in 6' to 7' of water, it's on!
I also believe this time of year all that is needed is a few days in the 70's!

Howdy all! I'm headed up to Bowie Saturday to see if they have moved up to pre-spawn areas. Having the last 5 days of 70+ degree weather should have woke them up. Got me an old topo map of the area before the lake was built, and maybe it will help. Gonna hit a few of my tops, some points and creek ledges. Maybe try my hand at spider rigging. Supposed to be cloudy, in the 40's, and little wind. I'll post a report on how it goes.

Yeah, that's usually best. Think I may be tinkling in the wind this weekend, though. This cold is going to knock them back. Warms up again next weekend, and it will be a full moon. We'll see.....
Might not be shallow, this front prolly messed up the prespawn a bit

They were 10’ in a feeder this morning. When the front and light rain came in they totally shut off for everybody up and down the water. Guys said they were the same depth yesterday, and 5’ the 2 days before yesterday. All females being caught are egged and ready. This weekend weather is surely messing things up, but a few warm days next week I think they are on in this spot. Every location is different, but the cold didn’t turn these ones back.
Oh, water clarity was about 2’ and they wanted minners, minner tips, and natural colors only.

yea, 2 days ago n prior they come in shallow ( 5-2') in the afternoon's, the bass were right on the bank
sometimes it takes a day or so to drop the water temps ...depends on the average depth of the lake and water clarity and such .
but to be sure about a 5 degree drop will send them out deeper for a few days or so this time of year or at least that's what I have seen on the early fish in lots of spots

Any luck on the new side? I usually fish around the boat docks, just seeing if anything was happening yet on the new side.
Thanks
I went last Sunday. Nada. The water is still in the upper 40's. Started out fishing back of coves around some tops I got out. Not a bite. I saw a lot of baitfish on my graph out in the open water out from the culvert in about 35-40 FOW. Also tried up in the cove just west of the state park in shallow. Nuthin. Of course, this is right after the front that came thru. Tried to buy some shiners at that store by the public ramp, but they were CLOSED! Imagine that, a bait store on the lake that is closed on a weekend day. Fished jigs. They should start moving up middle to latter part of March on the new side. Water is clearer. Caught a 3 pounder last year. Would love to take off on Friday when it will be 70 degrees before the next front. May go try Ray Roberts for a bit till the water warms up on Amon Carter. There's HOGS in there!
Thanks for the update, I will leave a report when I hit the water in a few weeks.
