Thread: Trailer wheel bearings

Jack up trailer, rock tire in/out, if there is play then you need to replace the bearings. Spin tire, if you hear grinding, replace. Take tire off, spin hub by hand, if you feel grinding or lots of resistance, replace. Should be a standard check every time you change/flush the wheel grease each year. If you see milky grease when you flush, then you need to replace the seals and might as well do bearings too.



If maintained, they should not ever need replaced.. maybe every 50-75k miles which is more than the life of the boat trailer for most people.

This is great advice. Taking care of your wheel bearing is essential to maintaining a boat properly. Nothing sucks worse than being stranded on the side of the road with a busted wheel bearing and you know your missing those bites!

I would think most any tire/auto shop wouldn’t have any trouble doing that. Quality tire pros on Cherokee are great folks and outdoorsmen I would give them a call, Maybe only a few days out at an auto shop for bearing swap.

I would check with a business that sales utility and enclosed trailers. Most have a service area and perform this kind of service all the time. Just do a search for this type business. Someone help this guy out that lives close to him. Many places around here but in Kentucky.

Sweetwater metal products. They have done it for me twice (2different boats) both time told me to go get a biscuit at Hardee’s time I got back the work was done

I was trying to point out that you shouldnt need anyone to check your bearings for you, it should be included in your yearly maintenance of re packing or flushing them. If you are doing this maintenance, then you know if they need replaced or not. If you are not doing the maintenance, then you probably should as $8 in grease a year is more cost effective than a $300 set of bearings every couple years.

And you do not just replace bearings as maintenance, you replace them as a result of lack of maintenance most times. Unless you travel enough to put 50-75,000 miles on them.

Trying to save you a bunch of money if you do not need them replaced, but if you ask a trailer shop to replace them then they obviously will whether needed or not. Most anglers should never need to replace boat trailer bearings.

That is all, just trying to save you some money.
