Default Fished for crappie, caught yellow bass 2/08/23

Dr Phil and I got out today for a mid afternoon fishing trip. The first hour or so we dedicated to scouting for crappie. Then we moved into the back of a slough and got onto several yellow bass. It was awesome. Fishing with 1/50 oz jigs and slab hunters by Bobby Garland under a floater set 24” in 4 feet of water, it was game on until we quit with just enough daylight to put the boat on the trailer.

I kept 32 yellow bass with several in the 10” range. One lone crappie grabbed Dr Phil’s lure while he was on the phone. We tried 4 different colors and they hit them all. Yellow bass are the best tasting fish that swims in our waters. It is a blessing when they are running this size.

Way to go DK! Most folks frown upon the yellows but that’s because they haven’t eaten any. That’s a perfect filleting size and will be some sweet eating. Congrats on a good trip and the fine meals ahead.

I have never eaten yellow bass. Do you fillet them just like a crappie?

Do you remove the red flesh like you do in catfish?
