    Default 1st crappie report 2023. 1/11/23

Today was the first time to crappie fish for me since the first week in November. I knew that I didn’t have a pulse on the fish. Grin.

My son in law works the 2am-10am shift at the post office so he came by our house this morning around 11 and asked if I wanted to go fishing. I guess that he could tell by the way I have been acting the past few weeks since Christmas, that I was needing a fix bad. He was willing to fish for a couple of hours even though he has to go to work again tonight.

We launched out of Wolftever creek ramp and I stopped at a nearby roadbed to make 5-6 casts. I caught two Drum right away and was able to keep my namesake well in place. But no crappie there. I quickly checked 6 structures in the next hour without finding any crappie. But on the 7th spot, we found an enormous school in 32 feet of water and the fish were suspended around 25 feet or so.

We fished this school for about 45 minutes until the wind began picking up in speed and we didn’t wear any jackets and I was beginning to get cold, so Scottie was more than glad to go put the boat on the trailer and warm up and get to bed.

Most of the fish were inactive in this school, but we did manage to catch 4 keepers, 3 short crappie and 1 spotted bass and 1 yellow bass. Bobby Garland baby Shads on 3/32 oz jigs and very nearly dead sticking was the technique that finally got some bites from this school. We didn’t take many pics.

Yeah I would be needing to go really bad too if it had been since November since last trip. Glad you got out and caught some. Hopefully won't be as long before your next trip. Thanks for sharing.

DK.... I need to really retire so we can get back to fishing! Just in case you think I forgot how to catch them, here's one I snatched at my favorite winter creek spots
