Depends on the lake bottom composition of the lakes you fish. I'm from West Tennessee and there were no lakes with sandy or rocky bottoms, and the waters are full of Crappie, so much so between the levee and the river (Mississippi) as to not have a size limit. I used to wade fish and always sunk deep in mud with each step but caught loads of Crappie and Bluegill. I live in middle Tennessee now and the lakes have a harder bottom. I think they use the best areas available and if the bottom is muddy then they will use it.
