    Default Good Friday Crappie 4/15/22

I was intending to take my brother in law and his grandson fishing today for bluegills, but he called in very early this morning and was sick and had to cancel. So I had a day to rest, or so I thought.

I knew that we were a day or so before a full moon phase and my solunar table showed a great movement today between 12-3, and I thought that I might like to go hit a spawning bank for some crappie.

I had to talk my wife into taking me to a nearby ramp and dropping me off and then come back and get me in a couple of hours. She had not done this since before her knee replacement surgery last year, so it took a little convincing her, but she finally relenting to my whining. JK. Grin.

To shorten the story, I had a great time fishing alone. I love to do it, but it isn’t wise to do at my young age of 79 years, 10 months. I had to make three color changes before I hit the magic color for today. It was a Bobby Garland Purple Mist fished on a 1/32 oz jig in less than 5 feet of water. The fish ate it up. Mostly males in full color and several were short, but I managed 7 keepers out of about 20 crappie and 1 big bluegill.

I took lots of pics but I won’t post them all. I started fishing at 12 and stopped at 2:30 pm. It got warm before I finished. Water temp was 66.5 for those that look for this info. I slow rolled the jig back through the spawning area and the fish were eager.

The secret to doing what I’m doing at this age is to never act old and my confession is that I’m a 17 year old trapped in a 79 year old body. The Lord is my strength and my portion forever. Besides, Jesus loves to fish as much as I do and he uses me to lure men and women into the kingdom of God through our mutual interests in fishing.
