Default BEATING DEAD HORSES - COMBO REPORT (if you wanna call it a report)

I remember back in the day, when I could find fish pretty good. All things come to an end I reckon.

LAST SUNDAY, 11/28: WB Tailwaters to give this FOLEY technique a shot. Water was 15,000 CFS, 54* and more sun than clouds. (Weatherman told a story, was supposed to be overcast).STILL NO BAIT, STILL VERY FEW BITES

    OBSERVATIONS:
1). As with all new techniques employed during tough conditions, VERY HARD to stay with it (lack of confidence)...I stuck with it until I lost half-a-card of Foley's before I ditched out in favor of my go-to jigs. Probably 2-3hrs before crying UNCLE.
2). I think my calculations are off with regard to weight/snagging. I understand that this technique works well casting directly up-current, but I stayed snagged more than not. Still have some learning to do.
3). THESE THINGS CATCH FISH, and I cannot wait to put them up against my jigs when the fish are actually THERE. Caught 1 walleye (15", so no photographic evidence), 1 trashy green fish with an oversized mouth, several smaller channel cats and 1 super-nice surprise: a 15" Sauger, the 2nd keeper I've caught this year (which will eventually cause me to make a LONGGGG RUN to some deep water for some vertical jigging to see if they are truly making a comeback).

12/3, Hiwassee River trip to see if I could scratch up some crappie. I'm low on fillets and need a break from the BEAT-DOWNS I've been taking at Watts Bar. WT was 55*, VERY clear (for the Hiwassee) and current was ripping. Had to step up to 1/8oz just to get jigs down. Was a gorgeous day to not be working, but fishin' was once again TOUGH I fished main lake ledges and the few I caught appeared to be on the top of the break in around 10ft of water of so. Conjured up 3; 1 white at 11" and 2 blacks at 12"+. I don't know what I'm doing wrong but these embarrassments are getting old

That sure is a pretty Sauger. I see a lot of boats stacked up along the ledges around the 58 bridge. Saw one fish caught as I idled by. Didn't want to wash them out. I found some under the docks out that way. Didn't get to go this weekend I was stuck at work

Hang in their. It will get better , keep going every chance you get.very odd year this fall so far .
I’m going to blame it on the rain and low water levels way on down the river from you on Guntersville we are as low or lower than I have seen it in very long time maybe ever this time of year and the water is the clearest I have ever saw it then front after front on top of fronts and unbelievable fishing pressure. Sure we’ve had a few days with limits on the crappie but most trips are 5-6 some 12-15 but it’s been very different for sure. some of the greatest fishermen that I have ever fished with is struggling this year also so I know it’s not that you have lost your touch. Maybe with some rain in the forecast if we get it that things will improve!

There is a way to get 90% or more of those snagged Foley or weights back. But your partner has to be quick to the big motor when the current is ripping. Then motor back up toward the snag while reeling in the line keeping tension on it. When you get along side the snag, it usually comes free pretty easily as it is the weight that is snagged most of the time. But if the spoon gets tangles In someone’s line that broke off before, I usually lose those but not always.

I was up there this morning and between Phil and me, we snagged 5 times on jigs. Only lost one.

    Nice sauger.

I was up river from you yesterday at the Blue Bridge in South Pittsburg. I could see the bottom in ten feet of water. I fish mainly for Smallies and you are dead on about low water. Fishing conditions were tough. Several times had bass follow my Shad Rap to the side of the boat only to look at me and leave.

Jack it was the clearest I have ever seen. I could clearly make out the bottom 10' deep as I drifted down river in the current. I could see Bass coming off rocks when I passed over. It was an eye opening experience. Not only could I follow my Shad Rap from the bank to the boat....but I could follow the Bass following the Shad Rap to the boat! Sometimes there were more than one. Occasionally I could get bit if I sped up and otherwise made the Shap Rad act up. When that did happen I could see Bass trying to bite the Bass that did Bite! Entertaining but frustrating. Only caught a dozen small ones when usually I catch a lot more. Maybe the recent rains will color the water.
