Default Fishing with Jay W. 2/04/21

Jay wanted to go below Chickamauga dam and catch some bluegills, so we hit the water around 11:30 and fished until 2:30. He caught one 9” Bluegill and 3 more about 8” and some little ones, but he also caught a keeper crappie on a night crawler early on, so I didn’t fish for the gills. I threw a crappie magnet in a couple of different colors and began catching crappie and White bass.

I had a 2.25 pound spotted bass, a couple of short spots and one largemouth bass to go along with the crappie and bite bass. We landed 4 keeper crappie and I took 11 White bass home for the freezer since White bass are my favorite fish to eat. Water temp was 45 degrees.

Thanks for the boat ride. I had a great time as always even if you did show me up in the catching department again.

I am going to pan fry the bluegills in butter for dinner tonight. My wife and I have not had whole fried bluegills in a long time and we are looking forward to having some with baked potatoes.

    Thanks again, JayW

Drumking, how are you dressing and preparing white bass that are edible? Had a friend that kept and baked some. He thought he was going to have to sell
his house but finally got the smell out.
    Tell'em I'll be there.

i fillet the white bass like I would a crappie. I only use the top loin of the white bass. I take my knife and cut just above the lateral line and remove it along with the rib cage.

I rinse any blood or slime off and then with my electric knife, I cut the paper thin red streaks off the fillet and that leaves a white loin. Then I wash it with a garden hose until now it quits foaming. White bass are very fat and need to be rinsed about three times longer than you would any of fish such as crappie.

When I am ready to fry up a mess of white bass, I soak them in a salt brine for an hour or more, the rinse and put whatever coating that I want. Zatarain coatings are good, but I usually just go with cornmeal with salt, paprika, black pepper, garlic and onion powder. Let the coating rest n the fillets for 20-30 minutes so that it doesn’t fall off the fish.

This is my favorite fried fish along with yellow bass. Grin. It just takes about 20 yellow bass to make a meal. Lolol.

Thanks, I don't know if I will try it but I will pass this info on and get someone else to try it. I do believe you though. With it being oily it might work blackened also.
