Default Crappie on Chick first time this year. 1/19/21

I took my friend Hippy Dave out for a crappie fishing trip this year on the Chick. I imagine that this is the first crappie trip since early December or late November. I mainly fished for Bluegills in December and Stripers in November/December.

But the fish were where I suspected them to be. Deep. We landed 12 keepers mostly 11-12” and the three that I kept for dinner were all males and full of Shad and fat as butterballs. We also caught 3 Drum and had one fish pull off at the boat. I suspect it to be a big crappie or a small Drum. I have a boat rule that says if you don’t see it and it pulls off, then it is counted as a Drum

We caught our fish on BG lures in various colors and I experimented with a Cabalas yellow curly tail grub that I operated on and eliminated most of the curl and it was productive too. Green Lantern, Monkey Milk, Black/chartreuse jokers, and yellow fished on 3/32 oz jigs and 20-25 feet deep. Creek channel edge and a deep spot adjacent to the main river that had an eddy current running through it.

Water temp was 47 and 31,000 cfs current. Wind from south and was chilly. Mostly cloudy with some sun.

Good trip. Interesting that your water temp is 2 degrees warmer than ours. Same river but you’re further north

That is a pretty warm water temperature for mid January. 39 up stream from you.....way upstream. Good catch though.

it could be just differences in temp gauges, but Dr Phil and his son fished below Watts Bar the day before in Jamie’s boat and he reported that it was 47 up there as well. Go figure?

It was 45.5 at Wheeler last Wednesday when we were down there but that was after a 24 degree night. Our lows here the past few days hav3 been in the low 30’s.
