    Default Foggy morning crappie 10/07/2020

I took my son in law crappie fishing this morning and continued his fishing education. He is catching on. Grin. But the fog early was so thick that I stayed in the creek until the sun finally burned the fog off, then we ran to the spot that I wanted to go early.

We did catch 8 crappie in the creek and then we ran into one of the local bays to a brush pile that I know about, it was game on. This brush is offshore and when I eased over it, it had a big school of fish on it. Drop the marker, deploy Ivan, aka Terrova 80 lb thrust with spot lock feature, ease back to and pick up marker and set the anchor.

I didn’t mean to get as close to the brush as I did, but it didn’t bother the fish that we were directly over them. They were 14-15 feet deep and when we realized that they were directly under us, We just open the bail on our reels and let the jig down. We caught 33 fish from this one pile but not all were keepers. It didn’t matter to us. It was fun and educating for Scottie.

We released all fish today. Two weeks ago, I was out of crappie, but now have my crappie basket running over. I will give most away to friends, relatives, and Wanda, my wife, will want me to fry some for her occasionally. I prefer bass over the crappie. I prefer most everything over crappie. Too mushy.

Foggy early with 70 degree water temp in the creek but 73 in the main lake. 44,000 flow rate and no wind for the second day in a row. I love it. Then sunny the rest of the morning. Scottie and I fished from 8:30 until 12. He had to go deliver mail this pm. I’m home in plenty of time for my afternoon nap. Grin.

There was only one fatality from the fish today. A short one that got the hook too deep. We try to take care of the resource and be gently with the fish, but sometimes they just croak like a frog.
