I went from Lowrance to Garmin a few months ago, and probably over bought. I have a 73 SV Echo Map model that far exceeds what I actually need. A good 2D, DI and SI model from any of the main makers will serve you well. Most folks seem to go way overboard with technology, IMHO. But to each his own. Good luck with your search and purchase.

I started out with Lowrance 5" model with GPS and DI. That was my first exposure to modern electronics. I changed to some Humminbird 800 series with GPS, SI, DI Hi def. I still felt as I wasn't seeing all that I should be, I watched hundreds of setup videos on them and never could get the image that I felt I should be getting. When I fish with others with different brand of electronics and while out scouting for cover and finding places, I made mental notes of where we were and I would go back and scan those places with my Humminbirds and I just had the hardest time finding the cover that seemed so easily located with different electronics. I don't have any experience with Garmin. I do however with Humminbird and Lowrance. I currently have Lowrance Elite 9 TI units. I'm able, I feel, to see more cover on the lake bottom than before with the Humminbirds. I caught them on sale for $599.00 at BPS. If you have more than one unit and you want to network them you will have to invest in a NEMA 2000 network kit for this particular series of units. The newer Elite TI 2 are capable of wireless networking. the other thing I like about the mid range Lowrance units you can customize your screens and their layout. The Humminbirds I had you could not. Happy shopping.
'Jesus answered and said to them, “Go and tell John the things which you hear and see:
The blind see and the lame walk; lepers are cleansed and deaf hear; dead are raised up and poor have the gospel preached to them.
And blessed is he who is not offended because of Me... Matthew 11:4-6
