    Default Which lake?

I really think that I would like to retire to Tennessee. I have pondered areas near Douglas and Guntersville. My tournament days are over and I just want to catch decent crappie. I'm from central Illinois so it doesn't take monsters to impress me. Without starting a giant favorite lake debate... where do you suggest?

Silverside, take a look at winchester tn. area. Our home lake is Tim's Ford, we are 15-20 minutes to Woods, 40 minutes to Normandy. No income tax, descent local taxes. We have a local crappie club that fishes all 3 lakes and would be glad to show you where and how to fish them. You mentioned Guntersville, we're about a hour away and fish it some. WE are blessed with a variety of fish, from bass, panfish, rockfish, walleye and trout, if you like to chase something other than crappie. There are several towns in this area with house prices from expensive lake homes to very moderate and land to build a new home if that's the way you want to go. Good luck on your search.

I have mellowed with age regarding fishing. I used to fish 1-2 tournaments a month and now only fish for relaxation. Sold my ultra fast canoe tipping boats and now my favorite day of fishing is in my jon boat on my local 10 hp limit 1000 acre lake. I just kick back, drop a jig, have a cold drink and wonder if I will catch something Which lake?

The area around Douglas Lake is very nice, you have Knoxville as a mid size metropolitan area with plenty of restaurants, shopping, concerts, and cultural opportunities. Also, within 45 minutes of the lake is Gatlinburg, Pigeon Forge, Sevierville area, a major tourist area with tons of things to do in the summer, and snow skiing in the winter. Dollywood and the Great Smoky Mtns National Park draw over 15 million people a year to this area. The lake has good fishing, but is drawn down approximately 40-45 vertical ft each winter. This makes for interesting fishing conditions throughout the course of a years time. I have said it many times, in the winter you can walk around your brushpiles where you caught fish in the summer.

To me, the area around Chickamauga Lake, Nickajack and the Tennessee River down that way would be a great place to relocate to in TN. Main reason is the water levels rarely fluctuate over 10ft in a years time, as it is navigable waters. The TN River forms Guntersville lake about an hour or so down the road. Chickamauga (The Chick) as they call it has a great Redear population, Bluegill population, Crappie population and the Florida Strain of the Large mouth Bass. Our State record Large mouth was caught there, and 30lb bags of Large mouth (5 fish limit) are a common thing, I have read about some 40+lb bags. If you like to dock shoot, Douglas is not ideal, we have no permanent docks other than marinas that have water on them year round. The tail races of the Dams on the TN river down that way also provide a bonanza for Walleye, Striper, and White Bass fishing. Look at Drumking's posts throughout the year, and watch some of Alphahawks videos, Trout Magnet Man, and you will see how great a fishery the TN river is, and it does not fluctuate as much as the highland landlocked reservoirs that are in Upper E TN. You might post down on the AL board to find out more about the BIG G, I have fished that lake, and it is great for Bass and Crappie. However, the BIG part is right, Guntersville can be rough when the winds get up. Good luck in your search.

I think all of the above is excellent advice. Come on down, visit, and stay awhile. We have all four seasons down here, often all in one day!

I feel pretty fortunate to be located just north of Knoxville. I’m within 30 min. to Norris, Melton Hill and Ft. Loudoun, an hour to Douglas, Cherokee and Watts Bar and less than two hours to Chickamauga. I don’t think there’s a freshwater species that can’t be caught in East TN, haha! As stated earlier, no dock fishing on Douglas in the winter, but a lot of fish are caught trolling, or casting jigs around schools of shad. Don’t think there’s really a “bad” place to live for fishing between middle and East TN. You’ve got a tough decision to make, good luck!
