Default Crappie fishing the Hiwassee. 92019

Mr S and I decided to fish different waters this morning and the Hiwassee River was our choice to chase these speckled fish. It was our first trip up there this year and we had no reports to go on, so we were fishing by the guess method. It worked pretty good. Grin.

Our first stop was on vertical deep structure and we caught 2 keepers and one short crappie and a small Largemouth bass. No more bites there after 15 minutes so we decided to go looking for brush and found a couple of brush piles in a little creek channel off the main river channel. It was a good move.

We stayed there for over two hours and ended up with a limit of crappie, but I released two 10” keepers. Two Bluegills tried their best to ride with us but we threw them back. I took home 13 crappie with the largest being 13.5”. We cast to the fish initially and caught a few, but later we got on top of the brush and vertical jigged. That gave us the most bites and fish.

The brush was in 13-15 feet of water and we just let the jig down and dead sticked the lure. That was the way the crappie wanted it today. Mr S changed lures frequently, but I stuck with 1.5” panfish assassins and 3 different colors worked for me. It was much fun figuring out the where to and the how to catch fish on a different body of water.

Thank you for the report Drumking. I get two weekends a month off work . Your reports help me hopefully get on some fish. I will be a few miles away at the Hwy 60 bridge in the morning

A good trip with good people, couldn't ask for a better birthday fishing trip. Thanks again DK for the company.

Those bridge pilings can have a lot of fish on them. It has been awhile since I was up there, but I have caught fish from that bridge. Some nice white bass too.
