    Default Son of a... Fisherman?

My youngest son asked if we could go fishing while he is on vacation... Well yeah I said. We launched at Skull Island about 7am. Skies were somewhat over cast, winds calm. Surface temp 86°. I didn't check the flow but from the mats of debris in the water I would say it was negligible. We headed down to a known spot scanned around and cast out a line or two. I caught maybe 3 - 4 keepers on the spot. My son on the other was only getting nibbles... So we decided to scout around the area, tried a couple more interesting looking places but no fish. Our last stop was a brush pile in about 25' fow. After getting several nibbles, as most crappie fisherman know, I was thinking the fish I was seeing on my graph must be sun fish, bream and the like. So I said to myself.. I have something for you. So I picked up my ultralight with #2 line drop the 1/64 oz head with a BG itty bitty and BAM a keeper crappie. Reset, and again another keeper. My son hadn't hooked up yet at this point so I handed him my rod and bait, and proceeded to instruct him on the technique. He's a fast learner. 4 - 5 hook-ups later he was smiling from ear to ear. I was a proud Papa that he took a interest in such a noble sport.... I told you that to tell you this. I have read over and over again and again, when the fish aren't committing to what you're offering, downsize your offering. Low and behold it worked. Maybe all the volumes of books I feel as if I have read are going to pay off after all... Happy 4th everyone.

Lebron, this was a great post and thank you for reminding all of us that Itty Bitty lures will trigger a crappie bite when all else fails. They don’t see this bait very much and it works. I have caught numerous crappie on Itty Bitty Slab Slayers.

Great trip and report. Small lures are my go to also especially if the water clears up early in the Spring.

Great post, and a good trip. Having the tiny stuff in your bag of tricks helps you stay busy when everyone else is rolling up and going somewhere else. I got hooked on the little stuff years ago but revisited it again a couple of years ago and haven’t put it down yet. Nothing like a 2lb crappie on a 2lb rig. Heart rate goes up instantly! Glad y’all had a fun day and figured em out.
