Default I Got Back From Reelfoot

I got back from Reelfoot with a nice letter from the Union City, TN Automated Traffic Enforcement Program saying a traffic camera caught me going over the limit. Is this fine legally enforceable? It says right on the ticket it wont affect credit score, drivers license or insurance but does say payment is required by law. Its only $50 but its the very nature of the situation that makes my blood boil. Cant even confront my accuser. Anyways, already spent a lot of money in the reelfoot/union city area through lodging, fishing guide, restaurants, licenses etc it just makes me think they want to tack on a little something extra at the end.

Also, on a brighter note, here are some fish we caught!

Been pinched by the same camera, it just ain't right. Barney should have to sit in his car and put the effort in. Puryear, TN has fine cameras and a 4 mile long 40 mph speed zone through NOTHING. It will induce a coma.

My opinion, and the opinion of many, the ticket is not enforceable. I would ignore it. Great catch!

I live on the KY/TENN line and venture down often. There are couple of towns that still do that even after being told they were not allowed to. Consensus is that the ticket is not enforceable and there is nothing they can do about it. It irks me that the states are giving out the information from the licence plate when they know this is nothing less than a scam. If it were I would frame it and hang it on my wall.

Got a friend who's a judge that said forget about it. Most towns who have them, are doing away with. Heard there was a tourism survey ran and 75 % of those ticketed never came back again.

I would throw that ticket in the trash can. They were doing that hot and heavy in Memphis years ago. It was actually a 3rd party contractor (Not MPD or City of Memphis) who promised the city a big dividend from the cameras. They went as far as putting on the tickets if not paid within in a certain amount of time a warrant for your arrest WOULD be issued. When push came to shove they got their rear ends handed to them, and I expect lost a lot of money in the process. I played the fool one time and sent in a $50 check. Nice catch!

In Tennessee a speeding camera ticket is a civil offense not a criminal one. The local governments sign contracts with these camera ticket companies and usually only get 1/3 of the fine if it gets collected. As I understand it the municipality would have to file against you in civil court and have you served with a summons to appear. It would be a lot of trouble and expense for the money they would collect.
I've personally threw one in the trash and after a couple months they give up after they see you're not going to pay it.
