Default One Dozen and One Half Dozen

May is my favorite month, and so far Mother Nature and the Panfish in ETN are cooperating nicely. The Crappie are about done with their business and moving out to the cooler deep Summer hideouts and the Gills are cruising the warm shallows getting ready to perpetuate their species. So with a day off work, why not a combination trip, try for both species. I started off shallow at a possible Bluegill bed I found earlier in the week and immediately hooked up with some scrappy 7-8 inch fish. The perfect size for the freezer, I stuck a bunch using a Lunkerhunt Spade Grub tipped with a Berkeley Wax worm.

All the ladies were released and 5 peeing Males were boxed up from this first stop. Many more were caught, thanked, and released back to resume their guardian duties. I moved around trying several more areas while it was still cool and only found one more bed, adding 7 more to the well. Satisfied with an even dozen, I changed gears and weapons and set out to find some deep Specks. The tree they were on earlier in the week was a couple miles up the lake but I made the run and was rewarded nicely. The sun was out bright so I probed the deeper end of the tree with the Bobby Garland Baby Shad and the Thump was on. No pics at this spot, just forgot actually, but it was fun and productive as 5 keepers were hauled up from the depths and were stashed in the other livewell. I explored a few more trees, only found 1 more productive area and it yielded a single keeper for the box. 12 Gills

A great morning. The Crappie were mixed boys and girls and Blacks and Whites, with the ladies egg sacs small and not bulging.

Nice mix of fish! I need to start targeting gills! You guys are just having too much fun. The first half of next week is going to involve chasing trout, so can’t start now!

I love those combo species trips. Beautiful fish and congratulations, thanks for the report. I just couldn’t help it. I went to Sportsman’s Warehouse and bought a South Bend Microlight rod/reel combo and 2 lb test line for my panfish fishing. I’m a sucker for crackers and gills. Grin.

I'm itchin' for some gill fishin' myself, if this rain will get out of here Monday and Tuesday...
'Jesus answered and said to them, “Go and tell John the things which you hear and see:
The blind see and the lame walk; lepers are cleansed and deaf hear; dead are raised up and poor have the gospel preached to them.
And blessed is he who is not offended because of Me... Matthew 11:4-6
