Default Fishing alone for crappie. 4/22/19

Having no one to fill my backseat on short noticed, I had my sweet wife put me in the water around 10:30 am or so and come back and get me at 4:30 pm. I really like fishing alone sometimes, especially when I didn’t know what the crappie are doing. I have been fishing tailwaters for Stripers and Walleyes for almost a month.

With the spawning season winding down, I wanted to scout off shore structures and see if the early spawners had returned to the deep water and they have. The bite was very slow and light. I think many of the fish were just bumping the lure with their mouths shut.

But I did manage to scratch out a limit and catch a keeper sized bass and one white bass. I probably caught as many short crappie as the keeper sized crappie. I took 14 home. I released two other keepers that were just barely 10” so I let them go to get bigger.

I tried two docks after noon and had one keeper and a short. Fish are stacking up on deep brush and my bamboo hotels. All fish came on 1/16 oz Stump Bugs and 4 different colors. Lemon/lime, Bluegrass, Blue Ice, and Black Chartreuse. I donated several jigs to brush, but that is why I buy them by the hundreds. I have to keep Curtis Hobbs busy. Grin.

Water temp was 71.9 at 4:30. Lots of current in the main river. Over 45,000 cfs.

Nice catch, they are still nesting here. Will check water temps tomorrow if I get to go but ours hasn’t hit 70 yet. The Bluegill should be next on the hit list!!

DK, on the lower end of the bar, they are still in the spawning mode. Water was 65 where we were at. Took my fishing partner (whom has early dementia) and his wife yesterday and they had a blast. Bite was good until about 11AM and it shut down.

Sorry I couldn't go with DK. And it's looking like I'm going to have to work all the way through to Monday... We will catch up soon enough though. Good to know the fish are heading back out.
'Jesus answered and said to them, “Go and tell John the things which you hear and see:
The blind see and the lame walk; lepers are cleansed and deaf hear; dead are raised up and poor have the gospel preached to them.
And blessed is he who is not offended because of Me... Matthew 11:4-6

I like to fish alone. I can actually have a clear thought without interruption. Smile

That makes sense, Wayne as the water temps below Watts Bar and the temps here in Harrison Bay Area are about 7 degrees different. The Bar is about 45 miles farther north.

Agreed. I find myself constantly thinking about how to improve my presentation to the fish at each spot depending on wind and or current conditions.

Thank goodness I ordered my jig heads when I did!
