    Default Pulling The Drain Plug

Our area lakes fluctuate a great deal each year, an average of 30 vertical feet for both Douglas and Cherokee. This year we have enjoyed higher than normal water levels for a couple extra weeks now, but TVA has finally started pulling the drain plug. From the below graphs you see the red line is headed down hill!

The black line is where the water was last year at this time, a big difference. Anyway, in the Spring I noticed an old landslide area on a bluff and motored over some of the brush and rock piles that were in about 20-25 FOW. No fish were marked then, but I checked it this afternoon and the depth finder lit up like the Vegas strip. I like to find new areas and sometimes it is hard to scout instead of fish, but it does pay off. Blacks and Whites of all sizes were caught, and the blue and white 1/32oz minnow Head with a Bobby Garland bait brought home a nice limit.

I really like the St Croix for single pole vertical jigging, and the Nanofil bent the hook and easily pulled the jig free from the deep water snags.

90 degree weather has returned, but the fish still have to eat. My spots will be too shallow/dried up soon enough with the falling water, but it has been a good summer.

Excellent report! I always dread the drawdown, but it’s almost here. I have wanted to fish the last two days, but the temps have discouraged me. Been threatening to do a night trip, but am yet to do one this summer. Oh well, I think I will just spend the weekend in a cooler environment.....sitting in a cornfield, watching the sky for doves!

I enjoy dove hunting, not very good at it but my wife does not like to eat dove or duck, so I do not pursue them like I do the Panfish. Good luck with the flying freezer fillers, I will stay with the finned ones!

My old eyes and slower reflexes doesn’t fill the freezer very quickly! That being said, I love trying! The shotgun that I use was purchased when I was a teenager! Still looks good, and has always gone “bang” when I pull the trigger! I follow a very strict rule of keeping my boat parked on Memorial Day and Labor Day weekend, so Saturday’s dove opener couldn’t come at a better time. Why would I want to be harassed by novice jet skiers and drunk boaters when I could sit in a field and get shot?!

Amen to keeping off the water on Labor Day weekend. It is supposed to be hot and you know those water lice will be everywhere. I saw two different boats pulling cranks yesterday and as tempting as that is I think I will watch the UT Vols begin the Pruitt coaching era on Saturday. Good luck in the cornfield!
