This is a perfect report an pictures! Thanks for post! I always pay attention to where the hook is when bringing the fish to the boat. It has helped me tremendously catch more fish!
Wednesday afternoon’s fishing trip could be easily described as an old Clint Eastwood movie - The Good, The Bad and the Ugly! The treasure was definitely buried in the deep water and had to be dug up with a single pole and a Slab Sauced jig. Jet Skis, pontoon boats and Master Crafts were out in force and definitely ran interference for said treasure! I gave the Flourocarbon line a second chance and quickly decided it is not for me.
?
Kinda Ugly! I am going to try some Suffix line that DrumKing recommended. I think I saw it on sale at Cabelas? The bad wasn’t awful, but I am almost OUT of Slabsauce.
?
Bad for me, good for the Head Bossman as I will order some more, along with the Garlic G version. I put mine in a small dropper bottle as suggested by a member on Crappie.com and find it less messy and easier to dispense. Now for the good.
DrumKing commented on a post I made last week about the THUMP. He gave a great description of what that is and feels like in various scenarios, casting and vertical jigging in particular. I agree fully and found myself concentrating on the bite, looking for the actual “tic” which he describes as the jig going into the fishes mouth. I do the pendulum casting thing in some rocky areas and find that line watching on the sink is the key. This one was caught on the fall and you can see where the jig is.
?
Stuck him quick. I do a lot of vertical jigging and that Thump is more evident when you can position the boat directly over the fish. By the time you set the hook the jig is usually sucked back into the fishes mouth, as seen here.
?
They do not get off when you stick them this deep! If you are late on the swing they are usually hooked on the front softer parts of the mouth.
?
But hey, catching is all good right. They were mostly cookie cutter Crappie this evening, nothing big but several legal ones made the trip to the freezer.

Update on the Bad, Garlic and Original SlabSauce has been ordered, will be doing a test of which flavor the finned fellows prefer!
A very good trip. Hi vis line helped me see a lot more bites and the thump is sometimes imperceptible cuz of tiny jigs and wind, etc. Gotta be on your game. Better every day, good job!
