Default electric filet knife vs regular

    Guys,
I've got a friend that swears by his electric knife for cleaning fish. I looked them over at Wal Mart yesterday and it seems to me that the tip would not do any cutting. Am I wrong about this? I use the tip of my regular filet knife almost exclusively. So, who likes the ele knife vs the reg. and why.

    thanks,

    Thumbs up

My son gave me an Electric filet knife several years ago. I didn't use it for awhile and stayed with my ole filet knife. One day I decided to try it on some average size striper. I was surprised on how well it worked. I don't know where my ole knife is now. I use the E knife exclusively.. The tip works fine as the scissor movement in the dual blades starts cleanly and slices down the backbone easily. Give it a try I think you will like it. I did.....iamfishing.

I use an electric and wouldnt give it up fo rthe world. You do use them differently than a regular fillet knife though. You do the cut behind the gill the same but as soon as you feel the knife hit the backbone you turn it on its side pointing the blade cutting edge toward the tail and run the knife through the rib bones to the tail but leave the tail skin attached to the fish. Flip the fillet off of the fish skin side down and the attached skin holds the fillet while you run the skin off. Then all you have to do is remove the ribcage. Do the other side of the fish the same. It is by far the fastest way to giterdone. Takes a little bit of getting use to but you sill save a lot of time after you do it a while.

Electric all the way. Especially when you have brought home a limit of crappie, your arm won't hurt.

With an ele. knife most of the cutting doesnt come from the tip, rather the first 1/3 to 1/2 of the blade closest to the point. It's more of a one, smooth motion with the ele. instead of starting several cuts working around rib bones and whittling fillets off a fish with a regular knife. Takes a bit getting used to an ele. knife and I will alost guarantee you will ruin a few fish with it but once mastered you wont ever go back. IMO you'll cut your fish cleaning time in half too.

I tried electric but I didn't like it. Maybe I didn't give it enough time or maybe I had a poor quality one but I was making a mess out of fish. I may try another one one day but for now I'll do it the ole fashioned way.

I use the electric on the bigger fish works fine but on the smaller bluegill i still like to use the small standard fillet knife seems it does a better job for me.
