It’s a great time. Going out on the ice is sorta spooky for a southern guy but when you see all the 4 wheelers, snow mobiles and even some pickup trucks you know it’s ok. The shanties range from tents to “home away from home”. Some have cooking stoves and beds. Setting up and augering through the ice is COLD. Then waiting for the flags is great, trying to outrun the kids is hard they can get it across the ice. Lots of socializing too, people come to see what’s cooking and have fun.Originally Posted by gabowman

Way back when I was in the Air Force stationed in Delaware, I went up to Maine with a buddy who was from there. Had a great time and actually got to go do some ice fishing. Being from the south and a guest, they let me have the privilege of cutting the first hole in the ice and handed me an axe to chop with. (you ice fishing guys see the joke already, I'm sure). Anyway after about five minutes and getting no where with that axe, they all busted out laughing and then I heard a motor fire up. I walked around the truck and they were using an auger to cut the hole thru the ice, which by the way was over 3ft thick. Yea they got me but it was fun and a trip to remember. An if I hadn't of been there and seen it, it would be hard to believe but, they actually do drive their full size trucks right out on the ice.

Ya thats pretty country. We did a rocky coast tour a few years back and stopped in Belfast for a bit we went as far as bar harbor. I really enjoyed that trip. I've never been up to ice fish but would love to. That maybe a trip for next winter. I'll have to plant that seed in the brother in law ear this summer when we're up there
