I compared it on line and it comes up a copperhead. Its head had more of a triangle shape until I put the 4-10 to it. I do have lots of toads around from the small lake I live on. So now I'm concerned if there are more.

So I looked at both and it looks like yawl may be on to something . It may be a brown water snake.
To be quite honest with you I hope it was.

I thought Water Snake but pictures don't always tell the tale.
But water snakes are harmless and eat a lot of rodents. Why no love?.

Because of that saying...."A good snake is a dead snake!" LOL

Yeah I'm trying to turn those markings into copperhead but it's saying water snake to me. I'm no expert though by a long shot. You have a pond, lake or creek nearby?

edit to add: just saw OP's post #12 above. Since you do live on a lake, I think that may just be what it was. Either way, I can't stand any of 'em really. If I have any question I shoot first and ID later! Had to evict a black snake from the chicken coop this summer. I told him he had one pass and if he came back I'd kill 'im next time. So far he's believed me.

Just about all poisonous snakes in N America have a vertical looking pupil. Just google a rattler, cottonmouth and copperhead and see for yourself. The Corral snake may be the exception. Most of us don't want to get close enough to verify...

My belief is that there are two kinds of snakes and only two kinds. Those that are dead and those that should be dead!!!!!!!!!!
