Transom mount longlining.
Hey guys. I have been longlining out the front of my ole Jon boat for about a year now. Got a platform built and a nice foot control trolling motor. Just staggering different length rods from the front on the sides you know what I’m saying. In a perfect world I would have a wireless trolling motor and I would fish straight out the back. My dad got me a variable speed transom mount. The idea is I will sit back there and troll from the back. I have a seat and rod holders in the back so in theory it should work. My question is...does anyone have experience with a transom mount working right? Does it propel the boat straight ? The setup puts the handle very close to me so adjusting speed and direction won’t be any more of a pain than with my foot. Just want some thoughts and/or ideas from all you EXPERTS

It should work but it's gonna be a little work too. IMO you will constantly be moving both the speed and direction of the trolling motor. Maybe you will be able to lock the trolling motor with a screw handle of some sort so it wont turn on you once you have it set. In the meantime keep your setup on front of the boat intact. You might prefer that better until you have plenty of time to fish from the back of the boat and get used to it. With rod holders up front and in the back then you and a friend or your Dad can fish together. It's gonna get "Fast and Furious" in another month or so for longlining..

I use a transom mount trolling motor for long lining all the time. On and off bumping on the tiller speed control if i go a little too fast and jigs start skiing. Make sure your outboard is straight like a sailboat keel. I have a fidgety Endura. 1 is too slow and 3 too fast. Wish I had a variable speed troller.

if you fish along - Adding a sandbag (50-75 lb) in the front of the boat will help in keeping the front in the water and you will have less of the wind blowing the front around.

I have a cooler with water in it as a live well. Really helps with boat control trolling and planning out with the 25 hp motor. I usually put water in it even if I’m not gonna keep any fish.Originally Posted by STUMP HUNTER

Like the guys have said above, put all of the gear you can in the front to weigh the nose down to keep from getting wind swept. My dad actually put both of his batteries under the front deck of his jon boat for that reason.
Also, for the guys talking about speed on the trolling motors, Minn Kota has about a 5-6 page manual with different size props. Most are about $25-$30. So you could play around with the prop size to see if that helps.
