Went out this afternoon for a couple of hours to look around in 2 creeks and the crappie and perch are loading up. Caught some nice 12 and 13 inch crappie. If I had my perch rig with me my shoulder would have sore from perch Jerkin.
Love those shadows. Might take my perch rig with me tomorrow.

What creeks please ?
I mentioned in another post about sidescan that I rarely use it. I live by traditional sonar and down scan but haven't utilized sidescan much at all. Your images are very interesting to me. At first glance I would have assumed most of that you have circled was bait but when you look closer at the shadows you can see its bigger fish than threadfins. I assume the ones that appear to be glued to the bottom without much of a shadow is what you were saying is perch and the ones up higher with the more round shadows further out from the fish scool is most likely crappie? Am I reading this right? I really appreciate you posting this.
Ok I like inquisitee minds. You observed and learn some important facts. In general you are right about perch and crappie. Only the shadow knows. lol Only us old folks remember that show. The further the shadows are from the bright spots (or fish} tell you that they are not on the bottom. All of those pics were in the mega frequency. In the last two pics the fish in the right if I remember correctly were in the creek channel. I think that is why the long lines. Now what can I learn from that. If I wanted I can go to those schools and drop a perch jerk setup and get a sore shoulder. I have seen video of some who use side scan to find schools of crappie get over them and cast jigs into them. In this case take my spoon and drop down most likely catch perch but could get some crappie.Footnote: spotlock comes in handy for this.I am exploring the different methods to catch perch and crappie. This is not about for me trying to find the perfect method to catch 200 fish each time. It is about learning and enjoy what you are doing. I would rather fish with a friend laughing and cutting up catching 20 than out alone catching 100. I hope this helps some and I am in constant learning so no expert here.

Thanks CK, that is very helpful. I doubt the Lowrance SS3D will have as good of a side scan imaging as what you are showing but I can usually easily spot bait schools. But I feel like in winter creeks I mark all this bait on side scan but can never tell the bait schools from the fish schools like I can on down scan and traditional sonar. Maybe I need to look for larger shadows instead.
I've had Garmin LiveScope on the front of my boat for about a month now and I am learning there are schools of fish that just tend to stay on out from the boat that just won't let you get over them. I was drifting and casting at Greenwood this weekend and kept seeing this tight school of fish staying 30 feet out in front of the direction I was drifting. I kept thinking I would drift over them and drop a spoon down but they kept staying dead in front of my drift. I finally cast a spoon out and jigged it back through them and got a chunky white bass. So I'm sure there are tons of fish that won't let me drive a running outboard right over them and mark them with traditional sonar. I noticed in your images that you were marking tons of fish on both sides of the boat but very few dead under you. I need to force myself to keep sidescan pulled up when I'm searching and get more comfortable with it.

I guess I should have taken pics going over them also but I wanted to show you can miss seeing fish just using 2d. If I used only 2d or down scan I would have thought there where very little fish in creek. Hence if I was on a perch jerk I would have missed a lot of fish. Also so much boat traffic in Wylie most of the time 10 feet and below I don't think it bothers them that much. I have seen schools with big motor 10 feet and below. Here is a link that will explain how side imaging works helped me out. Funny thing he does it in a parking lot. Also there is another video by Crappiecraze explains the 3 different frequencies and which one to use in which scenario.
